“The whole point of rugby is that it is, first and foremost, a state of mind, a spirit.” — Jean-Pierre Rives.
There is no doubt that every boy who stepped out onto the field to represent Salford Grammar School at rugby knew what that meant. No game in the school was played with a greater spirit. The camaraderie and comradeship was everything as these teams played against other Grammar Schools. The pinnacle of course was the first XV, and the ‘colours’ that were sewn into the school blazer.
Such was the reputation of the school for rugby, that the all time great David Watkins, a master of both union and league, came to play in the School v Staff match. All who saw that will never forget it.
